Selling points to candidates:

This is not your typical .NET custom web app opportunity.

The project's core is product engineering work using the Microsoft technology stack.

A product has to be designed to work on multiple types of vehicle mounted, mobile and standalone devices (tablets, handhelds, smartphones, PC-based), and it also needs a secured, web-based administrative user interface.

Implementation cycles run 2-3 years long, with very stable core implementation and custom deployment teams.

The product's deployment are typically very large (state-wide, big metro areas), highly customized, and handle high data volumes.

A couple of open-ended questions to ask:

Q: How would you design user interfaces for a software product using .NET technologies that must work on in-vehicle mounted devices, handheld tablets, as well as web-based user interface?

The candidate should articulate knowledge of WinForms, WPS (Windows Presentation Foundation, previously known as "Avalon"), etc. He/she may talk about Silverlight.

Q: How would you make the user interfaces of such a product, which is deployed on many different types of dedicated mobile devices (tablets, handheld smartphones), as well as browser-based users using it from a PC, to connect to, and work with the SQL Server based backend database?

The candidate should articulate knowledge of using ADO.NET, and knowledge of WCF (Windows Communication Foundation, previously known as "Indigo") and using SOAP-based or RestFul Web Services to connect front-end user interfaces to backend business logic and data management deployed on servers.
