 JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • As a strategic institutional asset, you will influence the tactical vision, scope, technological innovation, implementation and conduct of our radiation control programs. You will lead the development of and implementation of radiation control programs for spaceflight missions including model development, requirements derivation, requirements verification, and design and test strategies to meet requirements.
  • Perform and lead space environments and effects analysis for flight projects.
  • Evaluate the degradation of material and device properties under the influence of space environments.
  • Perform shielding and charging tests in various radiation atmospheres to certify survival in the harsh radiation space environment.
  • Lead and conduct radiation tests at beam facilities across the country, collaborating with university and industry partners.
  • Actively participate on institutional, multifunctional and/or cross-disciplinary tiger teams to resolve critical issues.
  • Infuse new capabilities into projects and systems.
  • In addition, you will be responsible for future investment strategies that align with both OSMS and client technology goals. Accordingly, you will author proposals to influence and support related research and technology efforts. You will also publish results in peer-reviewed literature, and make presentations at professional society and industry research meetings. As the chief radiation control expert, you will be instrumental in developing and mentoring our future engineers in the area of space environments and effects.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; Master's degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years related experience.
  • Recognized authority in the space environments and effects community.
  • Extensive hands-on laboratory experience dealing with flight hardware, including electron, proton, heavy ion beams, and vacuum chambers.
  • Broad knowledge in one or more of the following related fields: numerical analysis, data analysis, mathematical modeling.
  • Ability to perform experiments in small to large-scale experimental facilities.
  • Strong ability to communicate with a wide range of internal and external interfaces (i.e., NASA and non-NASA customers, scientists, technology developers, program and project management staff).
  • Solid experience in using one or more radiation transport tools (e.g., NOVICE, MCNPX, Geant4, ITS3, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently on complex problems and interfacing with a project.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel.
  • An active TS/SCI security clearance.
