Introduction

 

·        The worldwide (WW) Retail Online Engineering team is responsible for delivering the electronic commerce (eCommerce) systems and solutions that enable and support the Apple Online Store (AOS) - one of world's largest online retail businesses, serving millions of customers around the globe.

·        The team is part of Apple's Information & Systems (IS&T) division, and is based primarily in Sunnyvale, California with teams in London and Singapore supported by offshore consultants in India - working as a single global team.

·        This senior role is for a self-motivated senior program management professional who has several years experience of working in a complex, fast-moving electronic commerce or software development environment and who is looking for an opportunity to combine their skills in technical program delivery with product development using Agile Software Delivery.

·        The primary responsibility will be for the delivery of complex software engineering programs and products for the Apple Online Store platform, and potentially managing a small team of contract project managers, technical analysts, resources, budgets and the related reporting for a portfolio of projects and Scrum Teams.

 

Person Specification

 

Ø To be successful, the ideal candidate must have excellent technical project and program management skills, and be able to operate in a complex environment across multiple cost centers, geographies and systems and have an appetite to extend their scope beyond program delivery to learn about project governance and tracking in an agile software development environment.

Ø They are likely to have been a software developer or analyst who has moved into a program or product management role, and who is a good people and team manager, with the ability to manage teams of project managers and analysts.

Ø This role is not suitable for non-technical professionals.

Ø Typical projects include large web application developments that involve as many as 20 internal technical teams, multiple business stakeholders and external third parties, and this role requires an individual who knows how to quickly define and structure complex programs with multiple tracks, and understand executive level stakeholder management.

Ø A high level of expertise with project and program planning, dependency tracking and management, resourcing and issue resolution is essential, and the ideal candidate should be able to quickly pull together an example timeline for a web application development project.

Ø They must also have a deep understanding of Agile software development, and understand how to bridge from a Scrum team to a portfolio level view of a particular initiative, and be able to quickly context switch from team to portfolio.

Ø They must have gravitas, and the ability to command a room and to control a meeting of difficult stakeholders, whilst driving towards specific outcomes and objectives.

 

They will also have the following characteristics:

·        Bachelor's degree in a Computing, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related area.

·        Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or similar is highly desirable.

·        10+ years experience in project and program management and resource management in complex environments for budgets in excess of $5m.

·        Excellent written and presentation skills - able to communicate effectively with engineers and senior managers.

·        Excellent understanding of controlling and managing budgets, resource management and forecasting.

·        Project and program management experience in a software development environment - specific deep experience and functional expertise in a particular area relevant to eCommerce (e.g. Payments, Security, Web Development).

·        Excellent working knowledge of agile development methodologies (especially Scrum), Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification essential - with at least two years of practitioner experience.

Professional Experience

In addition to the core requirements above, the ideal candidate will have extensive and broad experience of electronic commerce, combined with deep specific expertise in a technical area, potentially one of the following:

·        Checkout Flows

·        Customer Service Applications

·        Mobile Application & Web Development

·        Payments & Payment Processing

They should be able to act as a thought-leader in at least one of these areas, and therefore potentially be able to value to their project activities as a subject matter expert in addition to driving program success.
