Position Title : System Engineer(Vmware/Linux)

Locations: Sterling, VA (4 pos.) & San Francisco, CA (2 Pos.)

Duration: Long Term Contract

    Job Description:

    • Client is looking for talented engineers who are willing to take ownership of our customer facing services. We maintain many platforms which provide services to thousands of customers, many of which are household names. These services use a wide variety of technology stacks, but all have strict performance commitments. We need people not only understand technology, but understand the processes and philosophies required to run highly available and high performing. Candidates must be willing to accept responsibility for end-to-end quality of service and must be able to build the tools necessary to ensure success.

    Responsibilities :

    • On the technology side, we are looking for people who can maintain all of the components in the technology stack:
    • Linux skills (administration and troubleshooting) is a must, as is networking (routing, firewalls, VPN), virtualization technologies (VMWare, cloud, data management (SQL, Lucene, Hadoop, no-SQL) and web technologies (http, SSL). Candidates must have the ability to directly manipulate these components, as well as automate processes that can deploy and support these components.
    • This is a highly automated environment. We write software to do anything that needs to be done more than twice. Candidates must be fluent with at least one automation language (bash, perl, python) and comfortable writing software that connects to third party APIs. 
    • The person in this role is expected to be versatile, continually expanding their skills and learning new technologies. Our technology portfolio is expansive and new technologies are being added every day. Candidates must be able to adapt to new technologies quickly. 
    • On the process side, we are looking for people who can execute best practices for making changes to customer facing services, responding to issues and keeping platforms secure. Candidates must be able to thoroughly document a change; including steps to deploy, steps to test and steps to roll back. Candidates must be able to explain their change in a public forum as part of the change review process. Our operation is an ITIL shop and exposure to ITIL principals for change, incident and problem management is a plus.
    • Our Operations strives to be a metrics driven organization. We build trending for our hardware and software, develop capacity plans and build predictive alerts that notify us of upcoming issues before the customers are impacted. Everyone is pushed to continually improve the monitoring of our platforms. Candidates must be able to build monitors that respond to data pulled from component utilization, logs, SNMP traps and databases. 

    Education and experience required :

    • 9+ years of experience in system administration and software engineering.
    • Should have a graduate or post-graduate degree in a STEM field and have experience with SDLC, ITIL and Agile methodologies. 
    • The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, capable of working in a fast paced and highly autonomous team.

    Good to have :

    • Experience building synthetic transaction monitors is a big bonus.
    • Experience with Splunk, graphite or Nagios is a bonus.

    Key Job Tasks :

    • Scaling and capacity management
    • Performance analysis – trending, analysis, identifying improvements
    • Capacity planning – monitoring, trending, analysis
    • Incident response – fault identification, alerting, triage and resolve platform issues, including on-call support
    • Application support - software deployment and configuration
    • System administration – OS deployment, maintenance
    • Automation – software installs, sanity tests, etc
