Job Description:

Under general supervision, responsible for designing, developing, testing, debugging and implementing middleware components, software tools, and utilities required for the operation, maintenance, and control of computer systems. Performs modifications to existing software to fit specialized needs and configurations, and maintains program libraries and technical documentation.

Installs and configures middleware related server and client software as needed. Tests, implements, and integrates middleware products as required. Administers and supports middleware products in production, test, and development environments.

Principle duties and responsibilities:

Responsible for evaluation, installation, configuration and maintenance of middleware components to support enterprise-wide systems infrastructure.

An understanding of operating systems, communications software and hardware, system and networking hardware.

Performance tuning, problem resolution, systems management and capacity planning, project work and support of user communities.

Responds to non-routine requests from customers; investigates with assistance from others as needed.

Understands the key business drivers; uses this knowledge in own work. Works to control costs related to own work.

Identifies and solves a range of problems in routine situations; analyzes possible solutions and assesses each using standard practice guidelines.

Prioritizes and organizes own work to meet deadlines.

Explains information and persuades others in routine situations.

Applies team effectiveness skills; promotes teamwork skills.

Provides second level support for system services and problem determination.

Interacts primarily with other IT areas and occasionally with business users and vendors.

Daily administration and support of operating systems and networking infrastructure. This includes problem resolution and system monitoring.

Work with applications developers, database analysts, and other support staff to troubleshoot and/or implement product features.

Work with OS level administrators to help middleware product integration into server OS environments.

Create and distribute documentation required for support staff to monitor and troubleshoot middleware related problems from data center.

Provide on-call support as needed (24 X 7).

Skills:

Has basic knowledge of disparate systems (UNIX, Windows, OS/400, z/OS, zLinux) at both the Middleware and Operating System levels.

Has intermediate knowledge of middleware products such as WebSphere Application Server, HTTP Server .

Has knowledge of software integration methods and support functions.

Understands the principles of capacity planning and performance management in large computing environments.

Performs system software maintenance and upgrades.

Completes system research and design - includes research of new products, enhancements to existing systems and design of product implementations.

This requires research utilizing the Internet, vendors, publications, trades shows and seminars.

This requires working with others on an implementation plan and schedule. Project management skills are needed.

Good communication skills.

Has strong analytical skills and uses these skills to solve problems.

Abilities:

Operates under moderate supervision

Implements system, configures technical components and resolves technical problems

Evaluates request for new and/or modifications to software and/or hardware solutions

Recommends alternative solutions to reduce costs or improve services

Follows up with users to ensure that service-level agreements have been achieved and resolves any outstanding issues .

May perform quality acceptance testing and provide training

Participates in assessing emerging technologies

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field and equivalent work experience.

Experience:

Minimum 3-5 years of experience .
